Between 1890-1940 English Tudor style homes became popular in America. The style was sometimes referred to as "Stockbroker Tudor" in the early twentieth century because it was a style favored by wealthy people who made their fortunes in the boom period of the 1920s. Some of the characteristics of this style include elaborate clusters of chimneys, pitched gable roofs, embellished doorways, an abundance of windows, and decorative exposed wooden framework. English Tudor style homes were meant to evoke the style of English royalty during the 15th and 16th centuries. The interior of Tudor revival homes also had certain characteristics including, a great hall and beam ceilings. This was a style that became popular in homes in Pasadena, California.
In the twentieth century, architect Edwin Lutyens helped revive the English Tudor architecture. Lutyens' houses featured prominent clustered chimneys and other Tudor characteristics which he helped develop into the Tudor Revival Style. Mackey Hugh Baillie Scott also made a name for himself as an architect who favored the English Tudor style. The English Tudor style Pasadena homes that were built in the 1920s and 1930s were created by several different architects, including Wallace Neff. One of Neff's most famous Pasadena homes is an English Tudor on Huntington Circle. Neff built this home in 1925 for the owner of the Huntington Hotel (now known as the Langham Hotel,) D. M. Linnard. This house is large and features about 4,684 square feet of living space including five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The Linnard home is a great example of the English Tudor style in Pasadena, and it retains its original design to this day.
